Another meeting announced – Nordic Welfare – a DIY Guide

Professor Jon Kvist,
Centre for Welfare State Research, University of Southern Denmark

Wednesday 28th November 2012

Venue: Old College - Lecture Theatre 175 (far
right corner of old quad opp Blackwells on South Bridge) Edinburgh University

Time: 18:00 - 20:00

 "From the
land of Lego and fairytales we bring you the building blocks to create your own
welfare systems. What is it about the Nordic welfare model that makes it stand
apart and achieve both economic and social goals?”

 Prof Jon Kvist has
not only posed the question – he will try to answer it at a time when Scotland
is considering constitutional change which might bring a Scottish welfare
system closer.

Jon will give a run-down of the social investment
policies in the Nordic countries; “Policies that not only mitigate social ills
but also prevent deep social cleavages locally anchored politically,
practically and economically.”

Jon Kvist is on the board of the Norwegian Welfare
Research Programme, Professor at the Centre for Welfare State Research,
University of Southern Denmark, and was Professor before that at the Danish
Institute for Social Research.  He’s a
popular teacher and often used as expert in Danish media and has directed
numerous international research networks and projects on social and labour
market policies. He has published widely, including Changing Social Equality:
The Nordic welfare model in the 21st century (Policy Press, 2012).

Jon will examine the Danish system " focussing on
childcare, education, social services for elderly, persons with handicaps and
employment services” — all those benefits in kind that to a large extent
constitute the Nordic welfare model.

“Honorary” Scot Jochen Clasen, Professor of Comparative
Social Policy at Edinburgh University will respond.

Ticketing details

Book free seats on the NH Facebook page or send an email
to Dan via nordichorizons@hotmail.co.uk
for numbers. Since this event is not in the parliament assume you have a seat
unless we get in touch.
General info and updates on speakers will be posted on
our Facebook page and website www.nordichorizons.org Please keep checking rather
than sending individual emails about the event – NH is a small, self-administering,
volunteer-based group with a rather ambitious list of new meetings to arrange.
Thank you!
