Nordic Horizons guide to Celtic Connections 2020

So many fabulous Nordic performers are appearing at Celtic Connections in January 2020, it seemed a good idea to list them. Each year, Scotland’s largest traditional music festival presents a “showcase Scotland” partnership with a different nation. This year’s it’s Finland … so there are loads of performances featuring Finnish artists playing with top stars of the Scottish Trad Music scene. Get booking folks. Norway Jan 19th 7.30pm Mitchell Theatre Scots fiddler Sarah-Jane Summers is based in Norway, and is reprising Owerset, her New Voices commission that’s themed around Scots and Gaelic words originating in Old Norse. Next meeting announced

‘Brexit, Scotland & the EEA: The Nordic half-way house option’ Tuesday 20th March 6pm to 8pm Scottish Parliament Sponsored by Ivan McKee MSP  Brexit makes it more likely Scotland will soon be negotiating its own relationship with Europe. But what will that be? Full EU membership or the expensive “halfway house” inhabited by Norway and Iceland? What’s life like in the EEA? Frustrating – since decisions and regulations are made elsewhere. But worthwhile? Christophe Hillion is professor of European Law at the universities of Leiden and Oslo and researcher at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and at the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies. He has advised several European governments on EU legal issues. He will discuss the impact of Brexit on...Read More

People Sized Democracy – the digital notes

This was a very special event for Nordic Horizons. It was the first after the sad death of our great friend and Nordic Horizons champion, Paddy Bort. The night was special and we hope you find the recording of this gathering to be informative and educational. It was.   We have a variety of materials from the event, including a short interview with our main speaker , Frode Lindtvedt. There are his slides and a full recording, in both video and audio, of the whole event. We would encourage you to share these items as widely as possible. Thanks. Download People Sized Democracy – Lessons from Norway – the presentation. Here is the short interview with Frode Lindtvedt. Here is the recording, courtesy of Democracy TV of the whole event. And finally there is an audio recording of...Read More

Next event announced – A ‘Swedish Model’ for private rented sector?

A 'Swedish Model' for the Scottish private rented sector?  November 4th 2015 6pm Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1SR  Mariell Juhlin, Head of National Policy and Analysis Unit at the Swedish Union of Tenants The state of the private rented sector in Scotland is a hot topic, largely focused around high rents. The average Scottish tenant spends 25 per cent of their income on housing costs. This compares to 18 per cent of social tenants, and 11 per cent for owner-occupiers with a mortgage.  The Scottish Government is committed to significant reform of the private rented sector this year, and it seems likely better protection against eviction and rent regulation are on the cards.  Tenants and housing charities are generally very supportive...Read More

McHorizons – Oslo 10 March 2015

Susan Aktemel, the social entrepreneur and founder of 'Homes for Good' spoke to an audience of housing specialists drawn from the private and public sectors and academia. It was a lively interactive meeting and this short video gives a flavour.

Possible Orkney – Meeting Notes and Audio

This event was excellent and a packed audience, judging from Facebook and Twitter, enjoyed a lively debate of the ideas raised. Graham Hogg and Alex Hobday presented a vison of a 'Nordic Scotland' which was challenging and different. You can listen to the audio below and download a copy of their presentation as well. However, it is worth understanding the background to this presentation, which sounds more like a manifesto. Judge for yourself.
